Be Good to the Greens and They’ll be Good to You

I am very pleased to report on our greens.  The green are awesome!  Rolling well and with consistent speed.  In this edition of my PRO TIP I am doing something different.  I am asking for your help with putting.  Together, as golfers, we can help each other find the bottom of the cup more often on well struck putts.

Ball Marks are repairable.  It takes about 5 seconds.
If not repaired properly the damage scars the green and creates an uneven putting surface - a “bump”.  Ball Marks left unrepaired take 14 days to grow and heal.

Putts that roll over ball marks and scars “hop” over the “bumps”, change direction and lose speed: offline and short.  As golfers we can help ensure Oakridge has smooth greens…and give well struck putts a better chance of finding the bottom of the cup.

For a limited time we will be offering the newest model of green repair tool with magnetic ball marker at a below wholesale price.  This model is endorsed by the PGA of America and thank you for helping us ensure the greens stay smooth as the summer begins.

Square Impact Putting
Posture, Pre-shot Routine and Set Up
Your posture is as important when putting as it is for the full swing.  Whether you stroke the putter or swing the club you set up for the shot and address the ball…both count as a stroke.

Square impact is when the putter returns to the ball during the stroke without changing.  If we lift or dip, sway or waver, our posture changes.  And so does square impact.  Essentially, where the putter is intended to make impact with the ball is different than it was during set up.

When posture changes the putter head moves as well.  You must compensate for this these changes when stroking the putt.  This creates inconsistency in your stroke and demands that you adjust during the putting stroke to achieve square impact.  The hands are now active; posture is different than set up and the putter head is adjusting through the stroke.  Yuck.

A pre-shot routine and comfortable, natural set up will encourage square impact by eliminating alterations during the stroke.  Less lifting and swaying (postural adjustments) means a more consistent stroke and truer putts.

Set up with comfortable posture.  Develop a pre-shot routine and be consistent.  A repeatable putting stroke will sink more putts.  Comfortable posture will enable square impact more often.

A miscalculated adjustment during the putting stroke is also known as a “YIP”.

IF YOU FIND THAT YOUR PUTTER IS TOO SHORT OR TOO LONG DURING SET UP ASK ONE OF YOUR PROS AT OAKRIDGE TO HELP DETERMINE WHETHER SHORTENING OR LENGTHENING YOUR PUTTER MAY ASSIST WITH SQUARE IMPACT.
